
Maj. Thomas Gilberg is the Assistant Jail Administrator and Major of Operations. Maj. Gilberg is responsible for managing the Receiving and Discharge Unit, Transport, Records, Medical and Food Services and Engineering. In addition Gilberg is overseeing the $109 million Detention Center Expansion Project financed by the county’s Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
Maj. Gilberg joined the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is 1987. He is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and moved to Savannah from Wisconsin. Gilberg is a P.O.S.T. Certified Instructor, a graduate of the University of Georgia’s Carl Vision Institute of Government Management Development Program and is currently pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice from Columbus College.
“Since my initial hire with the Sheriff’s Office my focus has always been in corrections and I have worked in and have supervised almost every facet of its operation,” said Major Gilberg. “Because of this fact, I have a deep and abiding respect for the work and will always be grateful for the service every officer assigned to corrections provides for the Sheriff and this community.”
